KUDZAI’S SPORTING ADVENTURES

By Joe Marozwa (Kudzai’s Dad)

Kudzai is a 16-year-old boy with cerebral palsy. He is an energetic boy who is always happy and adventurous. Kudzai loves soccer and dancing. He is a strong-willed and positive boy who refuses to let his disability dictate what he can and cannot do. Kudzai always tells me that he would like to be a soccer coach in future; he argues that although he is a wheelchair user he will find a way to demonstrate to his players.

In 2012 he joined The Chaeli Sports and Recreation Club (CSRC) dance club with his mother as his dancing partner. Since then he has never looked back; every Sunday of practise is a day he looks forward to enjoying. He has taken part in several Demo dances at dancing competitions over the years.

In 2016 Kudzai did some surfing sessions under the banner of Walking On Waves. He really enjoyed the surfing sessions and is always enquiring about William, the surfing instructor.

Kudzai is a CSRC buggy rider. In 2017 he was due to participate in his first Cape Town Cycle Tour – unfortunately the Cycle Tour was called off due to strong winds. The most disheartening part for Kudzai is that the competition was called off when he was already at the starting point, ready to go.

In 2018 he did several running and cycling competitions with Earl under the CSRC banner. Kudzai hardly sleeps the night before any race – he keeps working us up to ask if it is not yet time to wake up and prepare.

Kudzai finally got his Cape Town Cycle Tour debut in 2018. He sat for eight hours in his buggy, something the doctors did not think was possible. Although Team Kudzai could not beat the cut off time for medals, he was all smiles and proud of himself for having gone that far without sleeping or medical problems. He enjoyed the day and had a nice tour of Cape Town, true to the name of the race.

Kudzai’s first Cape Town Cycle Tour medal came in 2019. He and his team had a fantastic race. They managed to beat the cut-off time despite having a flat tyre along the way.

Sport has helped Kudzai a lot: socially, emotionally and physically, thanks to the CSRC. Since he started his sporting journey he has improved his social skills. He has made a lot of friends and has learnt how to work as part of a team.

Kudzai has become stronger physically and mentally and his overall health has also improved due to sport and the happiness it brings to him.
